M606 and M62 To Host UK's First Car Sharing Lane

| |

The first car sharing lane to be built on a UK motorway will soon be operational on the M606 and M62 between Bradford and Leeds in West Yorkshire.

The new lane will cost £2.5 million and open in 2007, improving journey times by up to eight minutes at busy times. Vehicles with more than one occupant will be able to use the one mile lane to skirt around congestion at Junction 26 on the M62 and gain priority onto the eastbound M62. Other vehicles are unlikely to suffer an increase to journey times.

Archaeological Relics Found During A30 Roadworks

|

Archaeologists working on the £93m A30 Bodmin to Indian Queens bypass have made a number of new discoveries while working along the route of the new road.

The route of the new A30 was carefully designed to avoid damaging ancient monuments, or their visual setting, and surveys have been taking place during the initial phase of works on site.

The results of the archaeological fieldwork will be made available to the public through a series of lectures and museum displays. Finds that can be removed will be deposited at the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro. The site of the discoveries will eventually be covered by the new road once they have been thoroughly recorded by archaeologists. Academic reports are due to be completed by the time the road is finished in July 2007.

Motorway Safety Messaging Completed in North West

|

The Highways Agency has completed an award winning motorway message system ahead of schedule. The system on the North West motorway network will improve safety and reduce congestion on major routes.

MIDAS, the Motorway Incident Detection and Automatic Signalling system uses detectors in the road surface linked to electronic motorway message signs to warn drivers of queues that have or are likely to be formed ahead.

The £12.2 million project has seen 46 new matrix 'football rattle' signs installed on the M6 between junction 22 at Newton-le-Willows and Junction 27 at Standish and on the M62 from junction 11 to 12.

Video footage and images from Highways Agency CCTV cameras will soon be available for public viewing, even on your mobile.

Previously the pictures were only available to service providers, the emergency services and some broadcast media. The 12 month trial will see all camera data made available to the public.

These images have long been available in Scotland, and can be used by motorists planning journeys, particularly traffic hotspots on the M8 and at the Forth Road Bridge.
